From a Personal perspective (by Doug Cook)

When I first joined the Group in 1995, I knew nothing about Family History Research.  Within a few years, I became Treasurer and one of the volunteers.  I spent my voluntary time reading books, looking at microfiche and CDs.  I knew nothing about Australian research, all of my forebears having come from the UK.  I am still learning!

I was elected President in 2003 and 2004.  That was a great learning experience.  For a lot of this time, I was coming in as a volunteer, once or twice a week.  I even tried opening at night for a few months, but that was a bit scary!!

I recently became a member of Management of History Queensland and this year, became President (now that is scary).  We are charged with running a Family History Fair every two years (next one June 1st 2008).  We also act as an umbrella organization for more than 80 family and local history groups within Queensland.

This is not the path for everyone but shows that you can become involved and you never know where that can lead.
