From a Personal perspective (by Doug Cook)

When I first joined the Group in 1995, I knew nothing about Family History Research.  Within a few years, I became Treasurer and one of the volunteers.  I spent my voluntary time reading books, looking at microfiche and CDs.  I knew nothing about Australian research, all of my forebears having come from the UK.  I am still learning!

I was elected President in 2003 and 2004.  That was a great learning experience.  For a lot of this time, I was coming in as a volunteer, once or twice a week.  I even tried opening at night for a few months, but that was a bit scary!!

I recently became a member of Management of History Queensland and this year, became President (now that is scary).  We are charged with running a Family History Fair every two years (next one June 1st 2008).  We also act as an umbrella organization for more than 80 family and local history groups within Queensland.

This is not the path for everyone but shows that you can become involved and you never know where that can lead.

Some websites for you to look at

A link to numerous Tasmanian databases…check it out.

Family history stories….interesting.

Genealogy Search Australia, the free Australian Genealogy and Family History Search Engine and Directory for the most useful Australian and International family history and ancestry sites. Extensive lists of convicts, bushrangers, ships, passenger lists, censuses, cemeteries, genealogical clubs and societies and family history sites. Search the World for your ancestors. There are links to databases, archives, shipping records, immigrant lists, genealogical directories and historical indexes

This is a link to a rather interesting site………….Rural, historic, abandoned and desolate places, travel in Spain and other things.  Worth having a browse.

Cemetery monumental inscriptions in South Australia….search by name of Cemetery

This is a link to databases and indexes regarding convicts.  If you go to their homepage you will that is has loads of other information relevant to family history research on the internet.
